The Lights(Rough Draft)
Leeann and Damien had waited a long time for this night. He had just finished up a big case at the law firm he worked for and Leeann had a 3 day weekend after working three, twelve hour shifts at the hospital.
They had rented a cabin in a beautiful secluded area with a lake for fishing a few yards away, the cabin had an upstairs master bedroom with a jacuzzi and a skylight for star gazing at night. They would have a wonderful time together.
If Damien ever gets here. Leeann thought, while she loved Damien she was always waiting around for him and this time was no different. He had said he would meet her at the cabin six sharp that evening and here it was going on 6:30p.m.
She had waited a few minutes and then as the sun started to fade it became chilly, so she took the key which was hidden under the turquoise welcome mat and let herself in. She poured a glass Pinot Grigio and looked out the window, expecting at any second to see Damien's silver Scion xD zooming up the dirt driveway, but she didn't.
"Damn it, Damien! Where are you?" she said picking up her cell phone and walking around the stylish yet quaint living room. Not getting any service, she tried the kitchen area and when thay didn't work she put on her jacket and stepped onto the front porch.
Finally when she saw she had service she hit number one button on the keypad and speed-dialed Damien's number, after a few rings it went to his voicemail, at first she was annoyed but then hearing his sweet Southern accent made all the annoyance she felt leave her body.
"Hello, babe. Where are you? If you are still at the office working I'm gonna kick your butt!" she said jokingly with a giggle. Hanging up the phone, she went back in to get her glass of wine and then came back out onto the porch and sat in one of the maroon rocking chairs.
When she had gone in for her glass of wine she had seen it was now a quater to seven.
"Cute or not." she said to herself, "When he gets here, he better be prepared to sleep on the couch tonight."
Setting her glass down and thought back to the day she and Damien had met that first time on campus.
He was a junior and she was just a freshman, she had been exploring the campus and had decided to stop into the cafeteria for a bit to eat. No sooner than she had sat down at a tiny little table by the window, two boys walked up and started giving her a hard time.
"Hey looks like we've got some fresh meat on campus." The short, chubby one said
"Yeah, I don't really go for redheads, but she'll do." The taller one who looked like he brushed his teeth with butter said, while fingering her firey ringlets.
She slapped her hand away and put down her tuna fish sandwhich, suddenly her appetite was gone. She moved to leave the table but the chubby one was blocking her way.
"Excuse me, you're in my way."she said.
"Come on, don't be such-" the chubby one started, before he was interrupted by a raven haired tall athletic looking man with alabaster skin.
"Is there a problem here, gentlemen?"
The boy with the yellow teeth and the chubby one looked at the dark haired stranger and that at each other. Seeing as even together they would be no match for the stanger even together they decided to try to worm their way out of the situation.
"Uuhh, n-no we were just playing around." The chubby one said.
"Well it doesn't look she she wants to play whatever little game you're playing so why don't you to rats scram." With that the two pests were gone.
"Ma'am, I hope they weren't giving you too much trouble?" It as then she noticed his accent. Being that the college was in Massachusetts it definitely stood it to her.
"Thank you so much." she said reaching out her hand to shake his, he accepted her handshake all the while staring into her soul with those emerald eyes. She invited him to join her and he obliged. They sat and talked for hours, and it was from that conversation she learned that he was originally from a small town in Arkansas and had come to college up North to study law after getting his bachelors. Ever since that say they had been inseparable. Even after he graduated the following year they still stayed in touch.
Even though it had been 10 years ago she could still picture it like it happened yesterday. Smiling, Leeann closed her eyes and waited for her knight and shining armor to come pulling up the driveway at any moment.
It was a loud bang that startled Leeann from her sleep.
Wow, I must have been more worn out from those 12 hour shifts then I thought.
She was even more startled to see it was pitch black outside and snow flurries had begun to fall. "How long have I been asleep" she wondered.
Walking into the house, she looked at the clock on the kitchen wall and saw that it read almost nine o'clock.
Where was Damien and what was that noise that woke me up? Maybe he had snuck into the house while was asleep and the bang was him closing the door, but if that was the case where was the car?
Damien!" She called out, but received no answer. She looked in the bathroom, the living room, even the backyard, then walked up the stairs to the bedroom. No one had been up there.
Where are you, Damien? Now she really was worried. She was about to go back outside to call Damien on her phone when something caught her eye outside. In the distance, past the trees and all the way down towards the entrance of the driveway, a light flashed. At first she thought her tired eyes were just seeing things but then it happened again. One light, then two lights, a pair of them together, side by side.
What is that? Is it Damien?Maybe he is having some car trouble. She ran back down stairs and onto the porch, she redailed Damien again. This time he picked up.
"Damien!Where are you? Is something wrong with the car?" she asked.
"I need-come-"
"Babe, you're breaking up,I can barely hear you."
"Aaargh!" she screamed in frustration as the phone died.
Well at least he picked up. she thought. He must be in some kind of trouble,he'll need help carrying his bags up to the cabin. It was at this moment she wished she had taken her own car instead of a taxi there, but she and Damien had decided it'd be easier for one of them to get a ride there and then they'd drive home together. When the cabbie dropped her off she noticed a marked trail through the woods that seemed a lot quicker than walking all the way down the driveway which even by car took almost 5 minutes dodged potholes.
Going into the kitchen once more she grabbed a flashlight that was in one of the drawers, flicking it on and off to see if it worked she set off down the trail. She couldn't wait to see Damien finally, after all the anger and worry they'd finally get to begin their weekend together and she wouldn't even make him sleep on the couch.
Her happiness soon turned to confusion though, when she reached the end of the rail and saw the entrance of the driveway completely empty. Walking over to the entrance it was completely deserted save for a pair of footprints and a stain in the fresh snow that looked like oil. Reaching down to touch the liquid confirmed this.
Maybe he got the car started again and is on his way up to the cabin now. Running once again, retracing her steps back to the cabin just in time to see a pair of taillights go around the back of the cabin.
He's here, she thought. He's finally here.
I'll meet him at the back door. Running through the front door, she hurriedly removed her her jacket and clothing from that evening, trading them for a slinky black dress she had saved for the evening. She started boiling water for the pasta that would be there dinner and pouring a fresh glass of wine for herself and a new one for Damien she walked to the back door to meet her man and when the back door opened she dropped both wine glasses to the floor and let out a scream chillier than the night air. This was not Damien she thought as the large hand of the stranger covered her mouth and with the other hand grabbed her around the waist. He pushed her into the passenger seat of his pick up truck, when he removed his hand she screamed and screamed and screamed but her knight and shining armor never showed up to save her like he did on that first day the met. Tears streamed down her eyes as the stranger tied her hands and feet, then taped her mouth shut and put a burlap sack over her head plunging her into darkness.
Darn it, Damien thought. I knew I should have printed out directions before I left the office. Even though he told Leeann he'd leave work early, right when he was about to leave his office one of his firms big shot clients called and kept him on the phone for almost 2 whole hours, after that he had to go home and pack, he tried calling LeeAnn when he was on the way but the service was terrible. He thought the drive would only be forty five minutes but he must have taken a wrong turn somewhere and had been driving around aimlessly since around 8 and to make matters worse it had begun to snow. He hadn't seen any other drivers on the road, so he couldn't and ask anyone for directions. Then as if appearing out of nowhere a car came slowly down the road, Damien flashed his lights signaling for the driver to stop. The driver was an older man in a pick up truck with a large graying beard and wore a baseball cap so low over his face you couldn't even see his eyes.
"Hi, sorry to disturb you but do you know how to get to rte 67 from here?" Damien asked.
"Yeah, just follow this road then, turn left at the fork in the road" the man said in a gruff voice.
"Thank you, sir."
"No problem."
The man waved and the two started to go their separate ways, as Damien began to roll up his window he heard what sounded like someone yelling his name, but quickly brushed it off as the wind playing tricks on him. He drove down the road smiling and thinking that this would be a weekend he and LeeAnn would never forget. By Goldie Treasure
